THEODORE.   Readers of "Southern Living" will recognize this beautiful Mirror Lake estate, completed in 1935 for Walter Bellingrath (original owner of Mobile's Coca-Cola bottling company) and his wife Bessie. The lovely, 15-room mansion is furnished with antiques and personal effects, including the Bellingrath's fine china and porcelain collections. Surrounding the home are 65 acres of immaculately manicured gardens that boast colorful azaleas, camellias, dogwoods, and hydrangeas. Those looking for extra romance should take the 45-minute tour of the Fowl River aboard the "Southern Belle" – views from the water are unparalleled.   (© 10Best)

This beautiful garden along the Fowl River near Mobile offers blooms year-round. Look for azaleas, tulips, roses, ferns, orchids, and hydrangeas. Tours of the home take place on the hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. While waiting, visit The Boehm Gallery next door to take a peek at the porcelains. (from Southern Living)

I took my 9 and 3 year olds to see the gardens, based on the review here. Although it was 97 degrees (August) when we went, we had a very nice time. The gardens are beautiful - lots of color, butterflies and open space. We enjoyed the conservatory, boardwalk, water views as well as the mermaid, lion and Rebecca at the well statues and plaques. We went in with plenty of water and came out hungry and sweaty, and ready for some food. The cafe at the Gardens is pretty pathetic, so we checked out Bellingrath Grill up the street and this was very pleasant. This was a wonderful trip for me and the kids.

I have only been to this place during Christmas time, and it was absolutely beautiful. The whole garden is decorated with Christmas lights, which creates a magical atmosphere and an unforgetable experience! I recommend visiting this place, especially around December!
