EDITOR REVIEW: GULF SHORES. This 6000-plus-acre wildlife refuge, which protects Mobile Bay from the Gulf of Mexico, is dedicated to preserving the coastline's native flora and fauna by protecting designated beach and dune areas. Among those who call the park home are sea turtles (they nest from mid-May to mid-August), coyotes, foxes, American alligators, and scores of migratory birds. One of the reserve's more unique inhabitants is the Alabama beach mouse, which has been placed on the endangered species list. Hiking trails allow visitors to explore the park more intimately – brochures and maps are available at trailheads and at the visitors center.
