GULF SHORES. A pivotal player in the Battle of Mobile Bay, Fort Morgan sits across the water from Dauphin Island's Fort Gaines. Fort Morgan was completed in 1812, and its pentagonal shape was intended to allow cannon fire in several directions at once, thus preventing enemy ships from sailing into Mobile Bay. One can only imagine the devastating crossfire that Union naval forces (led by Admiral D. G. Farragut) had to endure as they attempted to overpower Confederate garrisons stationed at these two forts. In the end, however, Fort Morgan proved to be outdated and unable to defend itself against fast, steam-powered ships, and Mobile Bay fell under Union control. Today, visitors are encouraged to tour the fort and stop by the museum gift shop for a few souvenirs.
