DOWNTOWN. Winner of nine battle stars during World War II, the USS "Alabama" logged battle time at Leyte, the Gilbert Islands, and Okinawa. The "Mighty A," as the ship was popularly known, is a South Dakota-class battleship with a crew capacity of over 2200. Its armaments included 48 40-mm guns, 52 20-mm guns, 20 38-caliber guns, and 9 45-caliber guns. Visitors to the park may tour the "Alabama," along with the submarine USS "Drum" and 23 combat aircraft.
