5. Fort Condé Museum and Welcome Center

DOWNTOWN.   Home of the area welcome center, this facility should be a first stop for travelers making their debut in historic Mobile. Fort Condé, a replica of an early 18th-century French fort, boasts a garrison of knowledgeable tour guides, all of whom are dressed in time-appropriate garb. Working reproductions of period weapons, including cannons and muskets, give tours added authenticity. A variety of artifacts from previous structures located on the site were uncovered during Fort Condé's construction in the 1970s and are now on display.   (© 10Best)
