DAUPHIN ISLAND. After the War of 1812, the U.S. military realized it needed to fortify its port cities to better protect them against potential invasions. Fort Gaines, on Dauphin Island, was one of the results of this strategic plan, and contractors began working on it in 1821. Workers, though, encountered scores of problems during the initial stages, not least of which was the fact that tidal waters surged into the work area daily, causing construction to be discontinued until the 1850s. After being relocated and re-planned, Fort Gaines "opened for business" just in time to see Civil War action, when it played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay. The site now features a museum and giftshop.
