DAUPHIN ISLAND. The first Europeans to settle Dauphin Island (Spaniards in the late 17th century) were attracted by its natural beauty and strategic location at the mouth of Mobile Bay. During the Civil War, the island played a key role in the Battle of Mobile Bay when the Union army overtook and occupied Dauphin's Fort Gaines. Today, the island is still greatly appreciated, but for different reasons. The citizenry of Mobile and surrounding communities flock here on sunny days to enjoy warm Gulf waters. Nature lovers, too, find plenty to do on the barrier island, home to a 60-acre bird sanctuary and the impressive Dauphin Island Sea Lab and its Estuarium, a public aquarium that recreates the four main ecosystems of the Mobile estuary system. (© 10Best) Visit this sanctuary for wild birds and weary folks seeking to get away from the typical coastal crowds. Come in the spring to see the migratory birds that pause at the island's 164-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary before they fly across the Gulf of Mexico.
