SPANISH FORT. On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee formally surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, ending the War Between the States. However, news of the surrender did not travel fast enough: Union and Confederate forces clashed some six hours later at the Battle of Fort Blakeley, a daring charge reported by "Harper's Weekly" as "as gallant as any on record." Today, visitors can tour the fort's remains, enjoy an overnight stay at the primitive campground, fish the Tensaw River, and explore hiking trails that cross the park's 3800 acres.
