DOWNTOWN. Over the years, Dauphin Street – which runs southwest from Water Street – has earned the honor of serving as Downtown Mobile's Main Street. Indeed, the historic strip of Victorian, Italianate, and Federal-style buildings is home to a dense concentration of top sights and gathering spots. It was also a principal street when the city was first laid out by the French in 1711. Named after the son of Louis XIV, Dauphin Street became Mobile's main commercial corridor, a status it maintains today, thanks to an intrepid revitalization plan. Many old buildings have been restored and turned into boutiques, art galleries, bars, and restaurants, especially along the section known as LoDo, the town's Entertainment District.
