MOLINE. You sit on a lush green sofa, palm fronds gently hanging overhead, as you listen to the beat of African drums. You admire the woodcarvings around you as the aroma of fresh coffee permeates the air. Your taste buds explode at the first sip of a dark, sweet mixture of espresso, honey and vanilla. Looking out over the horizon, you see it – lean, majestic and coin-operated: the mechanical hobbyhorse. In Exotic Imports Café, you're likely to forget you're in the mall. With a menu of mouth-watering light sandwiches and potent coffee drinks and an atmosphere straight from Velot, it's an oasis in a sea of fast-food homogeneity.

MOLINE. One of the Quad Cities' favorite pizza joints, Happy Joe's is a local business that first opened its doors almost 25 years ago. With over 12 locations throughout the Quad Cities, Happy Joe's serves up great pizza on both sides of the Mississippi. Their specialties include their famous fajita and taco pies – the "Matador" is even topped with refried beans! Just for the record, the "Little Joe" pies will whet your appetite, so you might as well go for the 12" pie. For dessert, you'll want to save room for a double scoop of their special ice cream, or maybe even the tasty "Caramel Fudge Pecan Sundae." Carry out and delivery are available.

DAVENPORT. Ask any Quad City native where you should eat before you leave the area, and you'll likely hear them list this place first. The famous Machine Shed specializes in two things: homestyle country-cooking and huge portions. The farmhouse décor is unique, to be sure, and provides a certain amount of visual entertainment while you wait for your food. After your meal, do yourself a favor and take a glance or three at their dessert menu, which includes fabulous seasonal cobblers and homemade pies topped with ice cream. For chocolate-lovers, the Shed offers their famous "Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae," which is as big and as sweet as it sounds.

DOWNTOWN MOLINE. This local favorite has had a special place in the collective heart – and stomach – of the Quad Cities since founder Angelo Lagomarcino first opened his doors in 1908. The downtown Moline shop is famous for its delicious homemade chocolate goodies, ranging from huge Easter eggs to delectable sponge candy. Lago's is also a popular lunchtime place. After one of their deli sandwiches on homemade rye followed by a root beer shake, you won't want to go back to work! There is a second location in East Davenport (563-324-6137).

MOLINE. You can tell when spring starts to hit the Quad Cities because the lines at this popular ice cream chain tend to get longer and longer. Whitey's, started by Chester "Whitey" Lindgrenin in 1933, serves up some of the best ice cream, shakes and malts that you'll find anywhere, and it's not uncommon for out-of-towners to leave the Quad Cities with a couple of gallons stored in dry ice for the trip back home.
