This long-lived Jewish deli has been feeding Montréal well for over 50 years. Family-owned, the small place pulls in a wide variety of dedicated locals, who come for the terrific breakfast fare, including bagels, omelets (try the spinach!), sweets, and even chopped liver. Weekends, especially Sundays, are often crowded, but if you're prepared for the wait, you're in for some terrific food. And with years of experience, the staff is attentive and efficient, ensuring that all goes smoothly.

He's been dubbed the "man of grease" in an award-winning documentary and judging from the plates he dishes up for his customers, it is no wonder. Completely slick and tasty, each entree comes with everything: toast, eggs, bacon, sausage and Cosmo's famed potatoes. Comfort food at its finest.

Montréal-style bagels are denser and chewier than their New York counterparts, and most locals will tell you that Fairmount makes the best. There are 20 or so varieties, all baked in a wood-fired oven. Flavors range from plain, sesame seed and onion to pesto-black olive, spelt and chocolate chip. You can also get soft pretzels, matzo bread and bagel chips. All this, 24 hours a day!

A Montréal institution, this steakhouse caters to the craving for beef served up with your choice of a selection of traditional French sauces. Fresh fish and seafood simply prepared also star on the menu. Housed in a 200-year old building, the entrance arch stands over what was once the left bank of the Little St. Pierre River. The décor is comfortably rustic with exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings and traditional Québécois pine armoires.

With a name like Joe Beef, you might expect the focus here to be squarely on steak. But such is not the case – fresh, market cuisine is the specialty. Whatever is best that day at the nearby Atwater Market is what turns up on the menu that night. Thus, the ever-changing chalkboard menu might feature virtually anything, from pan fried skate wing to tripe to seared tuna to rabbit ballotine. There's a raw bar as well, with a great selection of the freshest oysters, clams, lobster. The space is intimate with a rustic-yet-refined ambience, and the expert staff are amicable and well-versed with the kitchen's talents.

Shortly after its opening, Nuances established itself as one of the top dining venues in the city, and has held steady with a coveted CAA-AAA Five Diamond rating for superb cuisine. The menu is always a revelation, blending fresh herbs and produce with tender meats to produce fabulous entreés. At any given time, you may find Québec lamb, marinated salmon, rabbit, poached grouper, roast venison, and many other options, including ostrich. They combine beautifully with carefully-prepared side dishes and are a terrific preface to the sinful desserts. Great wines and liqueurs also available.

This steakhouse, a favorite of business types in the downtown area, is solid in both décor and cuisine. The interior evokes thoughts of an Old World wine cellar and is full of polished woodwork and arched windows, along with an exhibition kitchen crowned with a copper exhaust hood. The lovely space complements the cuisine, which focuses on USDA prime beef, dry aged for up to five weeks. A variety of cuts are available, including their well-known ribeye, or you may choose from lobster, veal, prime rib, lamb and fresh fish. A selection of robust wines accompanies the hearty meals, and you'll also find live jazz and terrace dining. The Montréal Tea Room is an exclusive private dining and conference facility.

This unassuming shop has been producing Montréal's best bagels since 1957. Remaining faithful to the eastern European traditions its original owner employed, the shop still rolls its bagels by hand and bakes them in a wood-burning oven that never goes cold. Subscribing to the idea of doing well what you know best, the shop also crafts only sesame seed and poppy seed bagels. Patrons clamor for the fresh, chewy treats as if there were no other flavors. And topped with a bit of cream cheese, these bagels will have you believing that no other option is necessary.
