If you're craving quality food, simply prepared and served in casual surroundings, head over to this fashionable eatery. Fresh ingredients are given prominence, and there are no repetitions; each dish is carefully and uniquely constructed. Enjoy the pan-fried Marieville foie gras escalope served as a napoleon with gingerbread, butternut squash purée, shallot compote with dried prunes, duck juice vinaigrette and allspice. The cuisine is creatively Québécois, meaning that, while many of the components are produced locally, it also takes advantage of French techniques. It's also a good place to pick up take-out for the comfort of your own home.

A Montréal institution, this steakhouse caters to the craving for beef served up with your choice of a selection of traditional French sauces. Fresh fish and seafood simply prepared also star on the menu. Housed in a 200-year old building, the entrance arch stands over what was once the left bank of the Little St. Pierre River. The décor is comfortably rustic with exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings and traditional Québécois pine armoires.

The hip surroundings don't overshadow the cuisine by any means. Everything on the menu is carefully prepared using only the best ingredients. Try seared sirloin steak, local lamb stew, roast chicken, braised veal, or even duck, salmon or rabbit. Each is accompanied by vegetable side dishes and fragrant sauces for a complete culinary experience. Homemade desserts and a good wine list add to the appeal. At night, the place becomes a social and drinking environment where it's not unheard of to spot a celeb or two.

Junichi Ikematsu's restaurant has been a breath of fresh air for Montréal's fans of Japanese cuisine. The sushi is fantastic – fresh and beautifully presented. And the rest of the menu? An intriguing mix of Japanese-Continental concoctions that raise eyebrows as they tempt taste buds. For example, there's red tuna tartare with oyster mushrooms and truffle oil; eel with risotto-style sushi rice, avocado and parmesan; veal steak with shiso pesto sauce; grilled venison with porto sauce and foie gras maki; filet mignon with duxelles, carrots and celery rolled with maple syrup French toast and beef stock-miso sauce. Unusual but rewarding.

Multiple-award winning La Chronique is a standout by any standard. Chef Marc de Canck's interpretation of New American market cuisine incorporates regional ingredients with exotic, global flavors – with fabulous results. Duck confit ravioli, pot au feu, veal filet with morels, and red tuna tartare are just some of the possibilities, and guests can choose a multi-course tasting menu, the three-course prix fixe option, or order from the a la carte menu. De Canck has extensive experience as a pastry chef, so do not pass up dessert!

Despite its rustic-sounding name, this widely praised restaurant is stylish and clubby, with ample amounts of dark wood and leather upholstery. Indeed, there's not a stuffed grizzly or mounted sturgeon in sight. The menu, however, features an abundance of game and fish, in sometimes wacky-sounding presentations that never fail to impress critics and foodies alike. Try scallops with fennel purée and lemon emulsion, or seared bison with physalis, cashews and chocolate. Desserts are beautiful and worth every calorie.

This steakhouse, a favorite of business types in the downtown area, is solid in both décor and cuisine. The interior evokes thoughts of an Old World wine cellar and is full of polished woodwork and arched windows, along with an exhibition kitchen crowned with a copper exhaust hood. The lovely space complements the cuisine, which focuses on USDA prime beef, dry aged for up to five weeks. A variety of cuts are available, including their well-known ribeye, or you may choose from lobster, veal, prime rib, lamb and fresh fish. A selection of robust wines accompanies the hearty meals, and you'll also find live jazz and terrace dining. The Montréal Tea Room is an exclusive private dining and conference facility.
