Austernkeller ("oyster celler") serves Munich's largest selection of bivalves and seafood, all fresh and flown in daily. Specialties include Maryland-style crab cakes, sesame-encrusted scampi and foie gras with glazed apple and red-wine sauce. The décor is Bavarian and the atmosphere is casual with cozy booths. Close to the Isar Tor, the restaurant is easy to reach by public transportation, but the entrance is subterranean so be alert on the street.

CITY CENTER - ALTSTADT. This café is located in one of the most beautiful regions of the city and affords visitors excellent views of the famous Glockenspiel, for which the café is named. Located on the fifth floor of the main building on the Marienplatz, the café serves up great beer and coffee and a delicious light menu. A must-see for sweeping views of the city center. Come early to get a seat.

SCHWABING. This hip young spot near the University is a great place to watch the local students as they traverse the city. An interesting selection of music and ambience make this a fun stop for a light breakfast or a heavier meal. Good drink choices compliment the menu.

La Famiglia offers traditional Italian fare in Munich's oldest hotel, operating since the 1400's. The rustic atmosphere includes candles, fresh flowers and white tablecloths. Wood-fired pizzas range from the simple margherita to exotic toppings like arugula, paprika and marinated shrimp. The menu tackles classics like prosciutto and melon, gorgonzola gnocchi and the fiery penne arrabbiata. The outdoor seating converts to a winter garden in colder months.

SCHWABING. Enjoy beautiful artwork and cuisine in an historic location, where both Lenin and Hitler allegedly ate. In the heart of Schwabing, this restaurant has been serving Munich since 1890 and celebrates its middle-class Italian roots. A romantic and intimate courtyard lays on the Eurocharm here. The pasta is made fresh daily with the finest of ingredients.

SCHWABING. Grab a Paulaner and take a seat in this beautiful, park-like setting. Draws a young, professional German crowd for the natural views and great beer selection. Offers a traditional Bavarian dining menu, as well as a good selection of vegetarian dishes. Visitors should make time to take a walk through the park, too. A must-see while in the city. As with most beer gardens, you may bring your own food, but are required to purchase beverages on-site.

CITY CENTER - ALTSTADT. This popular Japanese eatery is considered by many to be one of the best in the city, with a good selection of tempura and sushi. Great service and a nice atmosphere make this a definite place to try. For new sushi fans, the prix fixe menus are a good option. SCHWABING. This Schwabing "haute" culinary treat has been a favorite for business and leisure travelers in the city for quite some time. International chef Hans Haas continues to amaze and astound the taste buds with his menu, which becomes clear when the food is served. Excellent shellfish and game entrées make for a perfect meal and the ambience and service complete the meal.

HAIDHAUSEN - BOGENHAUSEN. Vinaiolo means "wine merchant" in Italian; accordingly, this restaurant boasts one of the largest cellars in Munich. Though upscale, jeans and three-piece suits are both acceptable. As one of Germany's best Italian restaurants, Vinaiolo attracts staff passionate about the concept, menu and vintages. Very popular and intimate in size, so make reservations. The six-course dinner is a bargain.
