CALABASH.
This fishing village, just across the state line, invented the concept of Calabash-style seafood (large portions of fresh seafood and homemade sides served in casual environs). Of course, there's more to do here than eat. Plenty of neat little specialty and gift shops sit at the intersection of River Street and Beach Drive, and it's darn near impossible to leave town without a trinket, piece of art or some other unique memento. One last note: Local lore has it that legendary radio personality Jimmy Durante once stopped here for a bite to eat and was so impressed by the hospitality of his hostess, he pledged to make her famous; ergo, his famous sign-off, "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are."
