RUTHERFORD. Founded in 1900 by Bordeaux native Georges de Latour, Beaulieu revolutionized California winemaking by using American oak barrels for aging. The result: a uniquely American product that's become legendary in oenological circles and has been on the table of every US president since FDR. When visiting Beaulieu's rustic tasting room, guests feel as if they've been whisked away to a Bordeaux farmhouse, a feeling further enhanced by sips of sauvignon blanc, zinfandel, and chardonnay.

NAPA. Sample award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah varietals in the rustic, stone-walled tasting room of Donald M. Hess's exclusive estate, set on Mount Veeder. Embracing the Italian concept that the best grapes grow on slopes, Hess purchased 56 acres in 1978 (the estate now exceeds 300 acres) and has since produced some of the Valley's more exceptional wines. The estate features an art gallery as well as a visitors center.

ST. HELENA. Hidden away and surrounded by acres of grapevines, this intimate estate seems to be one of those "lucky finds" somehow excluded from local guides. Having honed his craft since the 1970s, Joseph Phelps oversees annual production of more than 100,000 cases of signature cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, and merlot varietals. Tours and tastings are available by reservation only. Once you've secured a table on the terrace, sipped your new gewürztraminer, and taken in the extraordinary views, you'll easily conclude that the drive out was worth the effort.

KENWOOD. Able to trace its roots to 1906, Kenwood has come a long way since the Pagani brothers sold their product in jugs. The estate still boasts a bit of rusticity, and the tasting room is located in an old barn. Today, state-of-the-art equipment produces more than 400,000 barrels of award-winning wines, which range from Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc to Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Gewürztraminer. On weekends, the tasting room pairs dishes with particular labels to emphasize the symbiotic relationship between food and wine.

SONOMA. Reminiscent of the Italian wine country, this lovely complex overlooks the verdant Carneros grape-growing region and is a literal celebration of its founders' proud Italian heritage. The building's tiled roof and ivy-draped stucco walls exude a Tuscan feel, and the Mediterranean-inspired landscaping features olive trees, stone pines, and Italian cypresses. The estate also overlooks 90 acres of wetlands that serve as a waterfowl preserve. Not just "all show" however, Viansa produces a line-up that includes Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, Aleatico, Primitivo, and Cabernet Franc. Depending on the season, visitors may tour facilities, enjoy tastings, and explore the wetlands.
