RUTHERFORD. While the inviting fireplace might draw guests inside on the coldest nights, you can be sure that the expansive, wraparound deck with its magnificent views of Napa Valley is this bar's main attraction. Drinks are pricey, but the appeal of sipping champagne or one of 25 by-the-glass wines at this romantic hotel bar is strong. Sunset is the most popular time to attend, but the bar is open from late morning onwards. Food served includes a delightful spread of gourmet nibbles and main dishes; try shrimp spring rolls or a grilled Angus burger and pommes frites with your vino.

ST. HELENA. This cozy bar, located downstairs from the acclaimed restaurant, is a sublime spot for a glass of dessert wine and a bit of quiet conversation. A fireplace casts a flickering glow over relaxed imbibers and adds welcome warmth on chilly evenings. While the wine list is as impressive as you'd expect, high-end cocktails are also on offer. By no means cramped, the space provides enough intimacy to easily strike up a conversation.

CALISTOGA. One of the few breweries in the wine country, Calistoga proudly brews its grain in the midst of the grape. Wheat ale, pilsner, red ale, stout, and IPA are just a few of the hand-crafted brews you'll find on tap in the restaurant and the adjacent pub. The British-style pub is a comfy spot featuring two TVs for avid sports fans and a patio where live music can often be heard. Jazz, blues, and flamenco entertain crowds throughout the week; on Friday and Saturday, R&B and funk get folks out on the dance floor.

YOUNTVILLE. Adjacent to extremely popular Hurley's restaurant is this gem of a bar, an exercise in understated elegance. Dark woods and a high ceiling create a refined space that opens onto a pleasant patio, shaded by hanging greenery and umbrellas. Wines by the glass are priced reasonably, and cocktails and beers are also available. Naturally, the food is amazing, even the late-night menu – options include Belle River crab cakes, a grilled venison sandwich, and a variety of tantalizing desserts. Great people-watching, too.

ST. HELENA. This attractive stone building on the north side of town is a hit with locals, who relish its fine, handcrafted brews and satisfying food menu. Try an oatmeal stout or a "Certifiable" Blonde Ale on the oak-shaded patio, which offers pleasant views of the countryside. If you're in the mood for something non-alcoholic, SBC makes its own root beer and cream soda, too. Hungry? Silverado meatloaf or grilled mushroom polenta will certainly do the trick. The vibe is casual and laid-back, and you'll find plenty of families as well as couples and groups. Closing hours vary depending on the amount of business and on the season – they can extend till 2am when things are busy.

CALISTOGA. More than just a great place to grab lunch or dinner, Hydro has evolved into a happening weekend nightspot. Known for its great beer selection (truly a distinction in the wine country), Hydro offers 20 microbrews on tap, along with well-poured cocktails. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, you can hear live jazz and blues starting at 9pm (7pm on Sundays). You don't have to go hungry, either – salads, sandwiches, and a filling array of appetizers stand at the ready.

SANTA ROSA. Boasting an 8,000-square-foot dance floor – the largest in the area – this hip restaurant and bar attracts great local and national talents. Country, bluegrass, blues, and rock can all be heard, and occasionally, DJs and comedy acts take the stage. Happy hour specials from 4pm to 7pm keep the bar busy, and great deals on drinks are worth it; order eats like baked brie, tempura prawns, or an appetizer plate to accompany your libation. A great idea for a date or simply for an evening on the town with friends.
