8. Ruins of Pompeii

This should be at the top of your list, even it you have only half a day to spare. To get there, take a train ride from the Central Station in Naples and travel about 20 miles south of Naples on the other side of Mount Vesuvius. Unbelievable in size and preservation, the city of Pompeii fell victim to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Remarkable structures still remain, many of which still have amazing details and markings. Wonderful remains from examples of mosaic floors, baths, and temples to Greek gods like Apollo still exist. The forum, or public gathering place, is quite compelling with many of the ancient columns that surround the place still intact. You can stroll down one of the many streets and see the former retail shops, villas, and schools that existed. Be sure to see the amphitheatre where gladiators once battled. You can spend an entire day exploring the ancient city and not see it all!   (© 10Best)
