Interesting Facts

  1. The historic downtown area of Nashville is called The District. Packed chock full of tourist oriented theme restaurants and nightclubs, the District is rapidly becoming one of the South's busiest club scenes. Only Atlanta and New Orleans can boast more!
  2. In 1925, a radio station, WSM-AM, went on the air and began broadcasting The WSM Barn Dance. This show featured live country music performances. In 1927, the show was renamed the Grand Ole Opry and is currently the longest running radio show in the country!
  3. If country music isn't the tune you're singing, you may just be in luck! Even though country music is everywhere in Nashville, recent years have seen the influence of rock and pop creeping into the scene.
  4. Is it hot here or is it just me? It's not only you, especially if you're visiting in the summer, Nashville's peak season. The amazing thing is that summer is also when Nashville experiences the worst weather. During these months, temperatures can climb to 100 degrees and maintain a humidity level of 100%.
  5. Nashville is a growing modern city, so the city is best traveled by car. Be careful though, pay very close attention, the interstate highways have numerous divisions, so it can be easy to wind up heading in the wrong direction.
  6. Is there any room? Sure! Nashville has an abundance of hotel rooms and no matter what your budget, you'll find something just right. From moderately priced to expensive, Nashville has a room to suit your taste and wallet. However, don't forget tax. Nashville has an 8.25% sales tax and a 4% room tax. 12.25% can really add up if you're on a tight budget.
  7. A trip to Nashville wouldn't be complete without tempting your tastebuds with some authentic Southern treats. Collard greens, fried chicken, beans, biscuits and cornbread are "good eats." But the city doesn't stop there; Nashville has welcomed many diverse tastes with the Southern hospitality that one would expect!
  8. As the state capital of Tennessee, you'll also find plenty of other things to do and see besides the inside of country music halls. There are numerous museums, the Capitol and a full sized reproduction of the Parthenon. For history buffs, a tour of the Tennessee State Museum is a must.
  9. I'm seeing stars! Country stars that is. Take one of the "Homes of the Stars" tours – there are several to choose from. For your "not so ordinary" tour, try the Nash Trash Tours with the Jugg sisters. Traveling in a big pink bus, the sisters will give you the scoop on your favorite star.
  10. Like most major cities, Nashville has plenty to offer when it comes to shopping. Everything is a possibility in Nashville – especially western wear. There are dozens of shops specializing in country music clothing and accessories. Cowboy boots or sequined denim apparel? No problem. The selection is enormous!
