DOWNTOWN. Conveniently located in the downtown area, Jack's Bar-B-Que has gained quite a bit of regional and national attention for its excellent hickory-smoked barbecue. Their St. Louis Ribs and Tennessee pork shoulder are among the specialties, and both go down best with sides of coleslaw and "Mac Cheese." Jack's "Special Meals" include the family-sized chicken and ribs packs – either of which could feed a platoon of hungry soldiers! To prove to your friends that you sampled some of Jack's barbecue, be sure to pick up one his popular "Pigs Over Nashville" tees – you'll be the envy of everybody back home.

FRANKLIN. Though it's outside the heart of Nashville in Franklin, Saffire is worth the trip. The historic "Factory at Franklin" provides a perfect setting for the casual lunches and elaborate dinners served at this Southern restaurant. An extensive wine list and live jazz music complement the cuisine, which includes Saffire Paella, Bayou Mac, and hickory grilled filet mignon. Weekly wine tastings and specials are also worth checking out, especially the Tuesday night half-price wine deal.

This Birmingham-based barbecue chain is a big hit all over the south, so it's no surprise that Nashvillians love it too. ANTIOCH. Many consider the fare from Whitt's to be among the best barbecue in Nashville and with the size of the lunch crowd that pulls in here daily, it's easy to see why. The joint specializes in pork, but also serves up tasty (and smothered) helpings of beef, chicken and turkey. Warning: "hot" means "very hot."

This cajun establishment, owned by a family from Lafayette, Louisiana, has been in business at different locations for over 30 years. The short menu includes dishes like crawfish etoufee and gumbo. The small size of the building and the primary focus on lunch emphasize how popular the catering part of the business is. Watch for special events and parties, like Mardi Gras parties and the crawfish boils!

NORTH NASHVILLE. At this Nashville landmark, you'll discover fried chicken with a twist: the chicken is HOT. Even for people who swear they can stand anything, Prince's hot chicken presents a challenge. You can opt for four levels of heat, from mild to extra-hot. However, their "mild" is what most people would consider "spicy," so beware of what you order! Late at night, the wait can be fairly long, so you might want to call in ahead of time.
