STATE STREET. Blue Pearl certainly isn't your typical college town dining experience. No, this downtowner pushes the envelope when it comes to style, starting with its mod design and attitude. The white, monochromatic lounge areas are furnished with deep, comfortable leather chairs, encouraging the well-heeled clientele to nestle in and get comfortable with their cocktails. The restaurant side, meanwhile, gets high marks for offering creative gems like polenta-crusted meatloaf and mac-n-cheese with lobster or andouille sausage alongside decidedly retro numbers like the "Little Deb" Cupcake."

DOWNTOWN. This venerable restaurant claims that this is the place where the hamburger was invented! They have been grilling burgers since 1900, and over the years, they have perfected their technique: fresh, lean, high-quality beef grilled on unique vertical grills and nestled between two slices of thick toast. There is usually a line, but if you want the classic burger, there is no substitute. NB You won't find ketchup or mustard (you don't need either) at Louis' Lunch ... and asking for it is akin to high treason.

STATE STREET. This is the top pick for great pizza and a cozy atmosphere. An earthy crowd congregates here amid folk sounds by the likes of Simon and Garfunkle. Settle in at a wooden booth in the brightly lit dining room that has a distinct neighborhood feel. The crowd at this local favorite, which has been around since 1930, is older during the day and full of young people in the evening. In addition to pizza, enjoy dishes like stuffed calzones, eggplant rollatini, chicken Parmesan, baked ziti, or a large grinder on fresh Italian bread.

DOWNTOWN. Billed as one of the area's top soul food restaurants, the Mama Mary's certainly does their fair share to show that downhome eats can serve as the common link between town and gown. Indeed, visit either location and you'll likely see people from all walks of life munching on lovingly-prepared barbecue pork ribs, chicken-n-dumplings, or meatloaf. And while those are all outstanding in their own rights, the golden-fried pork chops, chicken, whiting and catfish are what truly steal the show – especially when they tandem with fried okra, black-eyed peas or baked mac-n-cheese.
