DOWNTOWN. America's oldest continuously operating custom house, this robust Greek Revival structure was designed by Robert Mills, one of the nation's early Federal architects. The granite building, now on the National Register of Historic Places, features doors crafted of boards from the "USS Constitution." The Custom House is also remembered for being the place where "Amistad" and its slave captives were brought by the Coast Guard in the early 19th century. The building features exhibits on maritime history.
