NEW LONDON. In the mid-19th century, summer vacationers stayed at the elegant Pequot House hotel, whose appeal was so great that it built surrounding cottages to house more visitors. As the area increased in popularity, the land around the hotel became a residential district (even though the hotel burned down in 1908). These days, folks can browse the neighborhood's intriguing homes, whose architecture dates to the early part of the 20th century. Houses are both simple and elaborate, and Pequot Chapel (built for hotel guests in 1871) is a picturesque Gothic Revival sanctuary still in summer use.
