NEW LONDON. These houses function as two of New London's strongest connections to the Colonial era. The Joshua Hempsted House was constructed in 1678 and is not only a wood-frame structure but one of New England's oldest. The second Hempsted House dates from 1759 and was built of stone by Joshua's grandson, Nathaniel. The restored homes boast period furnishings and provide a window into the town's past, which also included a presence on the Underground Railroad. A great visit for history buffs.
