FRENCH QUARTER. Home of the New Orleans' Hurricane, Pat O'Brien's is as good as it gets! This bar is THE BAR tourists visit when making a first trip to the Crescent City. Pat O'Brien's features dueling pianists in its cocktail lounge, and there are a total of five bars available. The main bar area features a family ambiance and a classic jukebox. There's also a relaxing patio area on site. Food is also available, and drinkers can (and often do) take home a souvenir from the gift shop.

UPTOWN. Known for its late-night scene, this comfortable dive attracts a mix of students, musicians and second shift employees, all of whom dig the bar's potent concoctions and cheese fries. Juke box tunes set the night in the motion, and the vibrant crowd doesn't shy away from dancing. Pool tables and video games provide additional diversions, and the spot's namesake patio offers comfortable seating.

GARDEN DISTRICT. The foot traffic off Magazine Street looks great from the second floor balcony of this trendy restaurant bar. The Balcony Bar also serves food and is a popular gathering place. The bar area on the first floor offers 75 beers on tap and the menu's Po' Boy sandwiches and Mediterranean fare are tasty. Both items are served until late. FRENCH QUARTER. A favorite with locals, this popular French Quarter bar makes a great stop after a day of sightseeing. The Old Absinthe House is rich in tradition and its building dates back to1807 when it was first used as a grocery then coffee house. In 1874 a bartender concocted the "Absinthe Frappe," which gained notoriety and changed the coffee house's name. Today the bar attracts both locals and tourists and has a sports bar-like ambiance that even includes a jukebox.

FRENCH QUARTER. With an all-day happy hour that runs until 8pm, Club Decatur is a popular spot. Although the ambiance is simple – typical bar decor – locals come here for the drinks. Low budget favorites include $2 drafts and $1.50 well drinks. The bar also stocks 200 types of bottled beer and the prices are affordable. Late night Club Decatur, which happens to take up half a block of Decatur, is a favorite watering hole for food service professionals.

MARIGNY. High ceilings, rich brown paneling, and a long, sleek bar adorn this attractive space, housed in an old Marigny building. The menu boasts extensive selection of imported beers, and the assortment of single malt whisky will delight the even the most discriminating connoisseur. A TV, pool table and pinball machine keep everyone entertained, and a hot lineup of live blues and jazz bands performs nightly.

MARIGNY. A colorful set of locals inhabit this watering hole, located on the first floor of the Royal Street Inn. Strange dιcor – headless mannequins, a shark's head, airplane seat and motorcycle – set an offbeat vibe that appeals to the neighborhood artists and musicians. And rumor has it the barbershop chair isn't just for show – a weekly special features a 2-for-1 haircut and shot.

RIVERBEND. This is the Tulane University hangout, so slip into some comfortable clothes and head over to The Boot. The bar, located in Uptown, serves classic pub grub – burgers and Po' Boys – and stocks a variety of beer. The decor is dark and woody and includes two pool tables and video games. Extremely popular after 1 am on weekends, The Boot also offers a number of happy hour and drink specials throughout the week. A favorite is Tuesday night, when locals and tourists alike pay a $5 cover and drink $0.50 beverages from 10pm to 1 am. Beware!

UPTOWN. During the day it's a neighborhood pub and at night it becomes a popular college dive. The Club attracts a diverse clientele and its ambiance is dark. What makes it a hot spot? Perhaps it's the dollar drinks and two-for-one specials. The bar also has a few dartboards and pool tables to help pass the evening. ATM on the grounds.

RIVERBEND. The decor is basic and the crowd middle of the road, but Cooter's remains a favorite because of the libations it offers and the fact that it serves food LATE. The beer list features 40 beers on tap plus 400 bottled varieties. Beverages may come from far away places such as Africa, Slovakia, Honduras and Wales. And if you're hungry, the kitchen stays open until one hour before closing. Menu items include shrimp and oyster platters as well as muffalettas and hoagies.
