UPTOWN. Reggae, rock, Cajun and country music top the list at Tipitina's, which has been attracting loyal crowds for nearly 30 years. The combination music club/eatery has a roster of musicians that includes the Neville Brothers and the Radiators. On Sunday afternoons there is a Cajun "Fais Do Do" dance where locals and tourists stomp the day away. Tipitina's decor is spacious and includes a balcony overlooking the stage.

FRENCH QUARTER. The original House Of Blues, created by Isaac Tigrett, offers traditional American cuisine and is known for its New Orleans special ribs, catfish and gumbo. The restaurant is connected to but independent from the music venue – a place that's legendary for its awesome shows. Featured headliners include folks like Los Lonely Boys, Incubus, Big Head Todd and even Steel Pulse. "In Blues We Trust," indeed!

RIVERBEND. Pressed tin walls and a narrow dance floor are part of the charm of the Maple Leaf. Live bands play genres like Zydeco, rock, blues and funk. Because the club is close to both Loyola and Tulane Universities, the Maple Leaf attracts a diverse crowd that includes college kids, professors, tourists and hard-core music aficionados. The venue is also one of New Orleans' premier Spoken Word locations. The club has been hosting a Sunday afternoon poetry series for two decades and poets take the mike at 3pm. Call ahead for listings and cover charges.

MID-CITY. Rock music and bowling? The combination seems to work for New Orleans' Mid-City Lanes Rock 'n' Bowl. The funky bowling alley/nightclub has been nicknamed the "Rock 'n' Bowl" by locals and is known for booking some of the best bands in the area. Zydeco, rockabilly and rhythm and blues mingle with the clamor of toppling pins and rolling balls. The place hops with bowlers and dancers alike. RIVERBEND. Bands take the stage about 10pm at this jivin' Uptown music venue. Carrollton Station showcases everything from Zydeco Cajun rock to classic rhythm and blues and even jazz-rock fusion. The ambiance is cozy and the crowd friendly. Carrollton's also schedules a Tuesday Song Writer's acoustic night, which highlights up-and-coming New Orleans talent. STREET CAR: St. Charles Ave line

FRENCH QUARTER. It's hard to beat the artsy vibe at this indie club. Folks from every walk of life come to hear for its impressive concert lineup, and Thursday night even features an 80s party, complete with go-go dancers. Illustrious red velvet, gold accents and gawdy chandeliers adorn the interior, which includes an ostentatious front bar and a large concert room.

WAREHOUSE DISTRICT. From folk to punk to hip hop, you never know what might be on slate at this hot music club. Cocktail tables flank the space, where patrons hover over delightful after-dinner drinks, like the Irish Italian Parade (Baileys and frangelico hazelnut liquor) or Oatmeal Cookie Martini while enjoying the evening's featured entertainment. Recent performers have included Death Cab for Cutie and Of Montreal. When there's not a live show, Republic throws great dance parties on Thursday and Saturday nights.

WAREHOUSE DISTRICT. From traveling professionals to hard-core college students, the Howlin' Wolf draws a diverse crowd. Located near the Convention Center, this live music club attracts a number of touring bands and the music menu ranges from rock to blues. Past line-ups have included the Black Crowes and the Reverend Horton Heat. Although the club is small, there is an upstairs balcony area as well as pool tables in the back. The Howlin' Wolf offers an acoustic musicians' open mike on Mondays. The ambiance is loud, the crowd energetic, and the prices – for drinks and cover – are affordable. The cover is cash only.

MID-CITY. Rub elbows with the natives at this diminuitive joint, where funk, blues and rock bands showcase regional talent every night. For a real good deal, come on Monday for free red beans and rice or hit the complimentary oyster bar at 10pm on Thursdays. There's no better way to experience the local culture, and you won't even have to pay a cover. No credit cards accepted, but there's an ATM on site.
