FINANCIAL DISTRICT.   Where the historic Customs House (1834) now stands was once a building that served as the setting for some of the most significant events in our country's early history. The Federal Hall was the site of the swearing-in of George Washington as the country's first President on April 30, 1789. Today, a statue commemorates the place and date of this event. The first Congress also met here until 1790 and drafted the Bill of Rights. After the capital moved to Philadelphia in 1790, the building served as city hall until its demolition in 1812.
