MORNINGSIDE. Construction on the seat of New York's Episcopal Diocese began in 1892. The initial plans called for a Romanesque design. However, after around 25 years of construction, those plans were scrapped in lieu of architect Ralph Adams Cram's gothic design. Today, the cathedral's two gothic-style towers, expected to reach over 250 feet in height, are still under construction. One of St. John's more noteworthy features is the Portal of Paradise, the ornate main entranceway into the cathedral flanked by two three-ton bronze doors.
