MIDTOWN WEST. The Oak Room reminds one of old New York with its classic dιcor and oak paneling. Top-name artists who are usually booked for lengthy stays play cabaret and jazz here. Dinner and shows are seasonal and by reservation only - call for details for cabaret. Hors d'oeuvres, sandwiches and upscale drinks are served in this comfy, yet elegant mainstay. MEATPACKING DISTRICT. One of the city's top clubs regardless of who's keeping score, the place "where house music lives" is indeed a primo spot to be in the Meatpacking District once the midnight hours roll in. The music – an innovative, global montage of everything from Afro-Latin and soul to techno and nu jazz – is a big draw, of course. The scene (sexy decor, a sunken dance floor, and cozy brown and beige banquettes) generates a fair amount of its own buzz... as does the beautiful, 20-something clientele. TRAIN: A, C, E, 1, 2, 3 to 14th St; L to 8th Ave

UPPER WEST SIDE. Ritzy Lincoln Center may seem like an odd place to go if you're looking to find some of the Big Apple's coolest, keenest jazz. After all, everybody knows the best jazz dens are dank, smoky hideaways, right? Well, Dizzy's dispels that myth with a fury. Young and emerging performers are given time on Monday nights (always rewarding shows), and the rest of the week is turned over to established performers. As for food, it's heavily tinged with soulful Southern flair – homemade pecan pie, collard greens, fried chicken and the like. Table reservations are encouraged for early sets but aren't accepted for After Hours (late) sets. Food and beverage minimums $10 at table, $5 at bar. TRAIN: A, B, C, D, 1 to 59th St-Columbus Cir

MIDTOWN WEST. Distinguished by its upscale attitude, this cocktail lounge has emerged as a popular place for folks who work in the Time Warner Center to gather at the close of the day with clients or out-of-town guests they'd like to impress. Trendy yet ultimately inviting, contemporary yet timelessly comfortable – Mo Bar is decorated with plush leather furniture, velvet drapes and central bar topped with hammered nickel. Signature cocktails include the Full Circle (Tanqueray mixed with pomegranate and pineapple juices) and the Saketini. TRAIN: 1, 2, 3, A, B, C, D to Columbus Cir

CHELSEA. African influences pervade this ultra-chic space, located less than a block west of Chelsea Park. Indeed, bongos, animal prints, trade beads and safari treasures provide the backdrop, and the crowd seems to move in trance-like harmony with the music. At the bar, the knowledgeable staff concocts magical cocktails, and it's not uncommon to catch a glimpse of a celeb or two soaking in the scene, entourage in tow. As to the door policy, play it cool and dress to impress if you aspire to make it past the sidewalk. TRAIN: C, E to 23rd St

THEATRE DISTRICT. This impressive venue pays tribute to soulful blues legend B.B. King and features musicians who specialize in everything from blues, jazz and hip-hop to funk, blue grass and even heavy metal. In fact, there's really no telling who may be slated from week to week – it may be a Pink Floyd tribute band one night, Peter Frampton the next, and then either Ricky Skaggs or Little Richard. Sundays are especially popular thanks to the live gospel music and brunches that feature downhome ditties like baked yams, mac-n-cheese, fried catfish and collards. TRAIN: 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, S, W to Times Sq-42nd St

FLATIRON DISTRICT. For all intents and purposes, this Flatiron spot is far too sexy to be thrown into the sports bar mix. This looks like a place where people with expensive taste in clothes and cognac (Read: A-listers) gather and indulge. Not surprisingly, 40/40 attracts plenty of big names – after all, Jay-Z is a co-owner – with its sophisticated environs. But make no mistake: Thanks to 15 LCD and 8 plasma-screen TVs, it's also one of the best places in town to catch the game. NB The place's name pays homage to baseball's Jose Canseco, Alex Rodriguez, Alfonso Soriano and Barry Bonds (the only Big Leaguers to tally 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in one season). TRAIN: N, R, F, V, 1, 9 to 23rd St

THEATRE DISTRICT. Little wonder these attractive digs attract such a loyal crowd – After all, it's a classy place to grab a pint in the Theatre District, what with the 16-foot ceilings, expansive horseshoe-shaped bar, the skylight, exposed brick wall, earthy colors and tiled floor. O'Lunney's also earns applause for its kitchen fare, a surprisingly eclectic array of dishes like Hungarian goulash, corned beef and cabbage, Yankee pot roast and Gaelic steak. Their weekend Irish breakfast is a well-attended affair. TRAIN: N, Q, W, S, R, 1, 2, 3, 7, 9 to Times Sq

UPPER EAST SIDE. This Madison Avenue piano bar, named after an author of children's literature, attracts a more mature and well-heeled group of clientele than some of the Upper East Side's other nightspots do. Murals from Ludwig Bemelman's depict scenes from "Madeline" and a few of his other stories, adding nice contrast to the bar's "Old New York" atmosphere. Indeed, this place is reminiscent of the city's classic piano bars – joints where you could enjoy a good drink and great music in relative peace. TRAIN: 6 to 77th St

MIDTOWN EAST. Sake is serious stuff at this authentic Japanese bar, located between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. In fact, aficionados of rice wine find themselves in quite a quandary as the stylish Sakagura stocks some 200 distinct varieties; meanwhile, beer, liquor and wine are available to those with more conservative palates. The sleek space has also garnered quite a rep for its food – little wonder considering superbly done dishes like hirame carpaccio, saikoro steak and sashimi. TRAIN: S, 4, 5, 6, 7 to 42nd St
