What Happened?
Poor service, tasteless, greasey food have replaced what was once a fine, legendary restaurant.
Having lived in New York City, only a block away from Carnegie Deli, I dined or ordered regularly from it. Thye food, while always generous, was high quality as was the service.
This past week after a show, was my first time back to Carnegie Deli and was sorely disappopinted. Other than the name and the photographs on the wall, this "new" Carnegie Deli was hardly measured up to the legendary past of the original.
Given the lousy service (from the hostess, wait staff and cashier), poor food quality and high prices, it was very clear that the new owners were trying to live off the celebrated history of Carnegie Deli. They failed and are merely another NYC chintsy, tourist attraction.
My recommendation? Well, I am not going back and suggest you avoid the "new" Carnegie Deli. Try Delancy Street for good, genuine delicatessen food.

Go, but be prepared to pay
We arrived for Sunday lunch, the line was out the door. We were invited to sit with two lovely ladies from the City. The atmosphere was great but $50 for a knish, reuben (shared), and one beer was crazy. Go for the New York deli experience, but be prepared, its very expensive for sandwich fare.

The worst tourist trap ever in New York City. They offer only seeded rye bread. When asked about a fatty pastrami sandwich they said their pastrami was juicy. Sorry guys, restaurants make extra money offering a fatty sandwich. The problem here is they trim the meat as soon as it comes into the house (as explained by the manager). A no go for deli enthusiasts!!

Probably my best Deli experience ever/anywhere. My business will be bring me to New York City on a regular basis, so I know I will be experiencing the same pleasures in the future.

Escorted my wife during our 1st extended visit to NYC in a long time. Remembered the Carnegie from my younger days when all we cared about was the amount of food we received for our $. It did not disappoint & the wait staff was the same (& I do mean exactly, the same) brusque, tongue-in-cheek rude as always. Great place for out-of-towners. We'll go back again, and again, and.....

Our waiter was the rudest, most insolent I have ever met - and it was no act - put on for the tourist. Okay, so it was New Year's Day, he probably wanted to be somewhere else, but this Gene Wilder look-alike couldn't even take the order properly - though no way was he going to write it down. He was at his most vocal telling us where to pay and to leave the tip on the table. The tip? You've got to earn it mate…We'll not be back!!

My wife and I went on a recommendation from a friend and we were very satisfied with the experience. Quick and efficient service, tight seating and pictures from every celebrity who has entered the restaurant. The best corned beef sandwich that I have ever had. However, at $11.95 without fries or slaw or potato salad it's very expensive. My wife had the BLT and it was decadent. In fact it was so over-loaded with bacon that she removed (I kid you not) 10 slices of bacon before she felt comfortable eating it. And at $8.95 it also was not cheap. Good coffee and excellent looking deserts, however we were too full to consider eating anything else. Conclusion to this story; although we spent $30 US for two sandwiches and coffee, tax and tip, we would do it again next time we are in New York.
