GRAMERCY.   Ask locals and they'll tell you where to head for one of the best bagels in Gramercy – Ess-a-Bagel, the quintessential New York breakfast joint, complete with paneling and a certain untidy coziness. The charismatic staff at this little shop, whose name translates from Yiddish as "Eat a Bagel," serves up Gibraltar-sized bagels that come in a variety of styles and flavors. Must tries for breakfast or lunch include the bagel sandwiches, which you may top with kosher salami, whitefish, onions, tomatoes, cheese and/or any number of condiments. Bagels are "bready" and bland. You can do better at a donut chain.

I'm surprised that no one has reviewed Ess-a-Bagel. They have great bagels, great cream cheese etc. to put on the bagels. Only negative is that it's almost always crowded-- locals as well as tourists.
