QUEENS. Located in Queen's predominantly Greek neighborhood of Astoria, Demetris probably has a lot of competition ... Or so you would think; a few things set this bustling taverna apart from all the other places in the area. First and foremost is the kitchen's ability to prepare awesome fish and seafood dishes, particularly broiled sole filet, grilled swordfish, and fried whiting. UPPER WEST SIDE. Gone is the haute Greek cuisine of Onera – in its place is this family-run neighborhood taverna that's drawn rave reviews all around. Indeed, en lieu of the raw fish and fancy tablecloths that were Onera's calling card, the owners have opted for familiar, time-tested classics like moussaka, spanakopita, and grilled octopus. Be sure to couple your meal with a bottle from their selection of Greek wines, most of them very reasonably priced. TRAIN: 1 to 79th St

TRIBECA. Thalassa offers the enchanting personality and cuisine of the Greek Islands in a setting that is a true feast for the eyes. Jean Pierre Heim designed this seductive space, turning an old storehouse for olives and cheese into a true Aegean journey – a bar made of marble from Thasos, artistic interpretations of sails, wooden tables from Mykonos, and subtle, azure lighting. Thalassa is far more than a visual spectacle, though. The kitchen delivers awesome renditions of fresh fish and seafood, and main courses of Pilafe (seafood risotto with Diver scallops) and St. Pierre (pan-seared Dory over artichokes) are particularly well done. MIDTOWN WEST. Chic Greek dining at its very best in an old-fashioned atmosphere. Diners choose from an assortment of fresh fish that is then prepared on the spot. Most menu items are seared to perfection on the open grill. Save room for one of the tantalizing desserts. Meals are an experience, so be prepared to splurge – and feast. BROOKLYN. If you're a movie buff, the key words "Elia" and "Brooklyn" may recall Kazan's adaptation of "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." That said, this Greek charmer is giving folks a whole new reason to think fondly of Brooklyn, Bay Ridge in particular. Like traditional estiatorios or tavernas – those social centerpieces of Greece's quaint seaside villages – Eliá seems to welcome patrons with a warm, cheery embrace that's punctuated by great music, seafood (grilled octopus is a must), and drink. Located in the Astoria section of Queens, this cozy taverna enjoys a loyal fan base because it delivers consistently superb traditional Greek fare and a family-oriented atmosphere that appeals to folks from all walks of life. Rooster cooked in tomato sauce with pasta is the house specialty, and the creative seafood dishes issue siren calls all their own. A true restaurant for all seasons, Agnanti features fireside dining during the winter months, and when the weather turns warm, they open the patio dining area, which overlooks Astoria Park. Located in the Alphabet City section of the Village, this Greek restaurant sports a long, narrow main dining room that juxtaposes both the contemporary (whitewashed walls) and the traditional (the phalanx of clay pots suspended from the ceiling). It's in these confines that, perhaps, the neighborhood's top ensemble of Hellenic dishes resides.
