MEATPACKING DISTRICT.   It may seem a touch ironic that you can find a French bistro in a neighborhood called the Meatpacking District, but that's exactly where Pastis hides itself. Casual and stylishly Euro, the place could have easily been a haunt of Hemingway and crew: cafe-style tables, sidewalk seating, a cozy bar area, and French doors that are thrown open on nice days. Inspired by Provencal cuisine, dishes like skate au beurre noir, fricasse of monkfish, steak frites with béarnaise, and braised lamb shank with white beans are both flavorful and well presented.
