BROOKLYN. Looking for an old school setting where you can devour a mammoth porterhouse and munch on fried potatoes? This two-story, time-honored steak place is perfect for you. Remember not to ask for a menu, as menus are reserved for only tourists of the most naive kind. Luger's makes it simple by serving only one cut, the porterhouse, but they do that one cut extremely well! The gift shop offers Luger's popular sauce and souvenirs. TRAIN: J, M, Z to Marcy Ave

GRAMERCY. This Laurent Tourondel bistro celebrates the quintessential American steakhouse, and flavors it with the award-winning chef's own sense of panache. Make no mistake: If there's one thing this place knows it's meat, and you'll see plenty of it if you take a peak in the on-site aging room, where USDA Prime beef sits alongside premium cuts of veal and lamb. Like Tourondel's Fish and Steak editions, Prime boasts a design that seems tailor-made for its particular brand of fare: earthy browns and tans, high ceilings, an open kitchen and bistro-style chalkboard menu. TRAIN: N, R, W, 6 to 23rd St

TRIBECA. Founded by the former headwaiter at Peter Luger, the elder of these two steakhouse siblings occupies the dining room of the historic Vanderbilt Hotel, and its vaulted, blue and white tiled ceiling was designed by Raphael Guastavino, whom the Vanderbilts also hired to work on Grand Central Station. This newer edition in TriBeCa, meanwhile, enjoys an equally spectacular space – one marked by stone mosaics, 14-foot arched ceilings, and walnut floors. On the menu are crowd-pleasers like steak for two, three or four. From there, the choices are à la cart, from cottage fries or mashed potatoes to creamed spinach or fried onion rings. TRAIN: TRAIN: 1, 9 to Canal St

CHELSEA. Choice selections of aged beef from around from the world help place Craftsteak a cut above some of the city's more established steakhouses. This award-winning kitchen prepares outstanding cuts of corn-fed New York strip, grass-fed filets, and Kobe beef and pairs them with sinful sides that range from roasted Jerusalem artichokes and braised red cabbage to hand-cut onion rings and fingerling sweet potatoes. Diners also get to enjoy perusing the extensive wine selection and taking in great views of the Hudson. If steak isn't your thing, try to score a sleek seat at their 11-seat raw bar. TRAIN: A, C, E to 14th St

THEATRE DISTRICT. Break away from the clamor of Midtown and step into what is emerging as one of New York's latest legends. Spanning three levels, this branch of the Double Eagle family perfectly reflects the pace and energy of the city: The see and be seen Power Bar occupies street level, one floor below that a is glass-enclosed dining area flanked by the restaurant's impressive wine collection, and the mezzanine level features tables with terrific views of the entire restaurant. As for the cuisine, hearty beef cuts, like the famed filet mignon, arrive alongside fresh Australian lobster tail and steaming side dishes – all served family-style. TRIBECA. Don't be confused by the pub-like interior of this TriBeCa star – the dark green walls, mahogany accents and dim lighting. Upscale Dylan Prime is anything but a beer joint, as you'll find out once you've seen the cocktail list, which features $11 cocktails with names like TriBeCa Town Car and Makers Mark Manhattan. And yet, this is far more than a trendy place to tip a glass – superb numbers like the Colorado rack of lamb, 32-oz. porterhouse, and succulent filet mignon most assuredly see to that. MIDTOWN EAST. One feels a subtle harmony while walking from the zinc-covered bar to the suave dining room, where black tables and comfortable banquettes complement the pleasant walnuts, caramels and creams comprising the color scheme. No, this is not your father's steakhouse. Laurent Tourondel's culinary mastery shines through in the certified Angus steaks (each of them accompanied by a sauce of your choosing). If steak isn't your thing, broiled Maine lobster, grilled tuna and spiced swordfish are available. Served in petite cast-iron pans, side dishes are à la carte. The complimentary cheese popovers served at the beginning of every meal are, in a word, sinful. TRAIN: 4, 5, 6, N, R, W to 59th St-Lexington Ave

MIDTOWN EAST. Noticeably different, the Post House prides itself on being a refined version of your typical steakhouse. Gilt-framed Victorian art and lovely china, along with a family friendly atmosphere, combine to give this eatery an ambience unlike any others in its class. In addition to its classiness, this establishment serves up tasty cuts of beef and trusty side dishes. Excellent wine list. TRAIN: 4, 5, 6 at 59th St; N, R at Lexington Ave
