Activity's picking up in Newark, and there's always something new and different going on. However it's best to visit Newark during one of its annual events – these generate excitement and are at the core of the city's identity. Music and arts events are a given, considering the city's wealth of resource in this field, and the happenings range from "Sounds of the City" summer concerts at Theater Square to the Open Doors Studio Tours of some of Newark's up-and-coming art galleries. Other traditions are rooted in heritage, and thanks to the city's large Portuguese community, there's a large parade and day-long celebration each June in honor of Portugal's national holiday, Dia de Portugal.
