Overview
Shops and restaurants with colorful awnings and market umbrellas line the waterfront. Doors are thrown open to reveal arrays of culinary delights, art and other treasures. Benches placed here and there offer pleasant places to sit and contemplate the light dancing on the Hudson with views of the rolling Highlands beyond. Though it has been compared to South Beach with its bustling shoreline, Newburgh has a distinct flair that remains uniquely grounded in its past from roots in peaceful Native American culture, to Henry Hudson's landing in the early 1600s, times of Revolution (and the distinction of being General Washington's headquarters), to being a major seaport and place of industry. The city that was once called "a pleasant place to build a town" has gone from boom to bust and back again. Now Newburgh is redefining itself as a millenial crossroads where arts, history and business come together to create a vibrant place to visit or live, work and play.
