Sailing each weekend from May through October, Hudson River Adventures offers two excursions to Pollepel Island which was believed by the Native Americans to be haunted. One tour allows passengers to disembark and don hard hats to walk around the ruin of the castle that was originally constructed at the turn of the 20th century for the Bannerman family's growing military surplus business. The exterior walls of the structure served as billboards advertising the Bannerman retail store to boats passing down the river. Today the interior of the castle is not open to the public, and the only way to get up close is to take this tour. (Please note: Tour requires the climbing of 70+ stairs.)

The airy warehouse built in 1929 for Nabisco becomes the spare backdrop for an art collection that was, prior to 1999, rarely seen by the public. Philippa de Menil and Heiner Friedrich began collecting these works from the 1960s through the present. Featured works include Andy Warhol's famous Shadows. The space has been designed with an eye to displaying the various pieces; the artists themselves participated in designing some of the presentation.

Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, fathers and master designers of Central Park in NYC, were also responsible for creating this 35-acre urban respite named for their mentor and supporter of the public parks movement. The landscaping features many a winding path opening to a picture perfect vignette of flowering shrubs, rolling hills, a pergola and pond. Polly Pond, especially when filled with ice skaters, has been inspiration for many plein-air artists. The park hosts a variety of events throughout the year, and the Shelter House also serves as Visitor Center for the town.

He took residence in 1847 and proceeded to remodel the existing structure into an Italianate villa with the design of Alexander Jackson Davis. He also added to the extensive landscaping to reflect his love of romantic 19th-century horticulture. The center's 500 landscaped acres also showcase works by many other contemporary sculptors such as the 40-ton granite Momo Taro by Isamu Noguchi and Richard Serra's 10-acre site-specific Schunnemunk Fork.

The Vanderbilt Mansion celebrates a way of life modeled on the English country house, the lives of the domestic staff and the relationship of the manor to the surrounding community, rather than paying tribute to just one family. The home is open to guided tours only, but the 211 acres of park land dotted with centuries-old trees, vistas of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains and the Italian Gardens are open to the public for free strolls, picnics and quiet contemplation.

Almost a straight shot through the woods from the New Windsor Cantonment, General Washington chose this small, fieldstone, Dutch-style home of Jonathan Hasbrouck to be his headquarters for just over a year towards the end of the Revolution. Location played a big role in his choice not only for proximity to the camp and forts at West Point, but the advantage of overlooking the river. Today the home contains folding period furnishings in its eight rooms to illustrate the necessity of accommodating many people in a small space, as well as military artifacts.

Housed in the Gothic-style Olmstead Hall that features a central, imposing turret, the West Point Museum has one of the oldest collections of military artifacts, weapons, uniforms and artillery available in the US. Some pieces date back to 1777, well before the Academy opened its doors in 1802. Parts of the collection are displayed to the public but all are available for the edification and research of the cadets.
