This castle was built in 1168-1178 AD and is the castle that gave the city its name. There are two reasons to visit: first, it's a historic attraction with rooms left as they were in medieval times, including the queen's room, the main chamber room, with high vaulted ceilings, and a Norman chapel. Downstairs you will find artifacts from the period. The other reason to visit is that the castle is right near the banks of the Tyne, and if you take the stairs all the way back to the square-shaped turrets, you are treated to a spectacular view of the famous five bridges that span the river, particularly the dramatic Tyne bridge. And if you look the other way you get a good panorama of the city. It's a great photo opportunity.
