This attraction dates back to the mid 13th century. In the 17th century, Henry III used the gate to keep any "unwanteds" out of his castle. In the 1600's, the castle was turned into a residence that was occupied by Patrick Black, from whom the gate received its name. Today the attraction is the main office for the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne. Only those who have been granted permission by the chief librarian may enter.
