4. Upper Newport Bay

NEWPORT BEACH.   The Upper Newport Bay is an estuary, which is simply where salt and fresh water mingle and mix. The 752-acre preserve’s a popular resting spot for migrating birds. On the average winter day, more than 30,000 birds bypass the best beaches in Newport to hang out and socialize in protected waters of the bay. For people, there’s hiking the Newport trails to Muth’s Interpretative Center and, at North Star Beach, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming and even clam digging underneath the warm California sun.   (© 10Best)
