NEWPORT BEACH. Although the beach is popular in and of itself, Balboa is perhaps best known for its historic pavilion – an attraction for scores of families over the years. Crowned by a cupola and famous for its steep gables, the pier-perched pavilion dates from the early 20th century. It's worn many hats in its time: terminal point for the Pacific Electric Red Car, venue for Big Band acts in the '20s and '30s (ever hear of the "Balboa Hop"?), bathhouse for vacationing well-to-do tourists from LA, and departure point for whale-watching and sightseeing cruises. Balboa Fun Zone (1936), a classic beachside amusement park, boasts its original Ferris wheel and merry-go-round.

BALBOA ISLAND. Between December and April, the waters off the coast of Southern California become a major attraction as folks from all over the world clamor for seats aboard whale-watching cruises. The stars of the show are California gray whales, which make seasonal migrations between the Bering Sea and the warm waters of Baja California. Other species like the bottlenose dolphin, California sea lion, and great white shark make frequent guest appearances during the daily excursions. Cruises depart at 10am and 1pm Monday through Friday and at 9am, noon and 2:30pm Saturday and Sunday.

CORONA DEL MAR. Established and seedling gardeners should make it a point to visit this unique facility. The gardens, a veritable living museum of plants and flowers, features colorful seasonal plantings, water gardens, cactus and succulent gardens, and a stunning rose garden. Even so, Sherman is more than a collection of exhibition beds – the facility also includes a library of maps, documents, newspapers, and other publications related to the environmental and botanical history of the Pacific Southwest. The onsite cafe serves French fare for lunch and brunch.

NEWPORT BEACH. Salt water and fresh water ultimately mix in the estuary known as Upper Newport Bay, one of the last remaining formations of its kind in Southern California. Here, the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve was created in 1975 to preserve the coastline and tidal wetlands around the bay. Today, more than 200 species of birds, some of them endangered, inhabit the 700-plus-acre preserve, making it a popular destination for bird-watchers. In addition, visitors find hiking, biking and horseback riding trails; boat launches; and designated areas at North Star Beach for clam-digging and swimming. Educational programs and visitor information are available at Muth Interpretive Center, a 10,000-square-foot facility carved into a bluff overlooking the bay.
