NEWPORT NEWS. With over 8000 acres, this is one of the largest municipal parks east of the Mississippi. It's also one of the best equipped, with a plethora of facilities and activities for all ages and skill levels. Tots will enjoy one of the many playgrounds, history buffs can view a number of well-preserved Civil War fortifications, and golfers can take advantage of all 36 holes on two public courses. Rentals are available for boating and bicycling on two lakes and 30 miles of trails. There's also a 30-acre model airplane flying field, an archery range, and an 18-hole disc golf course. 188 campsites, too!
