NEWPORT NEWS. With its comfortable country French décor and French-inspired cuisine, this upscale Hilton Village restaurant is quite popular, especially for special occasions and dates. Lightened versions of classics, and plenty of fresh seafood options, coupled with seasonal produce and a good wine list, create a casually elegant ambience, which will satisfy your desire to "dine out" without breaking your diet or your wallet. Desserts are always worth ordering as well, and the options include sinfully decadent chocolate concoctions in addition to house-made sorbets and ice creams.

NEWPORT NEWS. With authentic German food from the Rhineland region, this place has been a local favorite for over 20 years. The menu is limited to three or four items in each category, but that is enough – they are all uniformly excellent! Just pick what appeals to you, and you cannot go wrong. Don't skip dessert here – the hazlenut cake is amazing. In the local "Taste of Tidewater" poll, this restaurant garners rave reviews each year.

NEWPORT NEWS. Authentic Japanese décor, low lighting and tunic-garbed chefs make this an entertaining place to dine. Eight people are clustered around a hibachi, where the chefs yield knives and bandy Japanese proverbs while diners look on in amazement. It is fun, and the food is good, with options that are almost unlimited. Seafood, chicken, beef or vegetarian dishes can be whipped up in seconds. Enjoy the sushi sampler or try the sushi bar. Exotic drinks are also a specialty of the house.

NEWPORT NEWS. The first sushi bar on the Peninsula is still one of the very best! The sushi and sashimi are legendary here, and the chef makes each serving a presentation. There is even a "beginner's" sushi platter for those who are ready to taste this delicacy for the first time. There are other items on the menu, but you are missing out if you don't try the sushi.

NEWPORT NEWS. This simple place can hold its own with the best of them. As is often the case, it doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside you'll find warmth and incredible food. The marinara sauce, the homemade garlic knot bread, and the antipasto are top-notch. And you'll be treated like an honored guest whether it's your first time or your hundredth. The portions are huge, but the bill is not.

NEWPORT NEWS. New York-style calzones, Stromboli, pizzas, and subs, along with chicken, seafood and veal dishes make this a local favorite. The courteous and friendly staff and the comfy chairs that encourage lingering also help to make the eatery popular with locals. Located in a strip mall, the exterior does not indicate the quality or fun inside.

NEWPORT NEWS. Since 1934, Port Arthur has been serving great Chinese food. When the restaurant moved to its present location in 1974, loyal diners followed, and many are still frequent patrons. Locals love the Mandarin and Szechwan dishes, and the level of heat can be customized to your preference. There are also dishes without sodium. Takeout is available.

Being stuck between a comic book store and an insurance company in a strip mall is not the most appealing location for a restaurant, but Roma Italian has made the most of it. The owner, Tony, will most likely greet you, and he will also wait on tables when needed. The foccacia appetizer is cooked to perfection and the entrées run the gamut, from simple spaghetti to elaborate veal dishes. But everything is good, so your selection just depends on how much you want to spend. You can have a great meal here for a little or a lot!

NEWPORT NEWS. Known for their appetizers, sushi, sashimi and noodle dishes, this is a low-key place that does their simple dishes exquisitely. The green mussel appetizer is a favorite, and the seafood Udon with shrimp and scallops is delicious. The sushi is still the star here, and it is marvelous in both presentation and taste. To finish, try the green tea ice cream.

NEWPORT NEWS. Sushi rules here but they also excel at other Japanese dishes, deciding just what to order might be difficult. There are combination meals so that you can have a sampling of several of their styles – the sushi and tempura special is a local favorite. The décor is simple and the service is attentive but unobtrusive, so you can enjoy your meal without feeling interrupted. A very pleasant place when you are in the mood for Japanese food.
