The city of Norfolk, Virginia, is often referred to as "The Navy Capital" of the United States thanks to its position near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay and its close proximity to one of the world's largest natural harbors – Hampton Roads, a body of water that to ties together the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Newport News. Today, this waterside city is home to one of the largest naval bases in the world, and a number of tourist attractions in the immediate area definitely warrant planning a Norfolk vacation. Indeed, tied as it is to US naval history, there are plenty of fun and interesting things to do in Norfolk. One of the most popular attractions in Norfolk is Nauticus, The National Maritime Center. It's located along the downtown Norfolk waterfront and features a number of terrific oceanography exhibits. History buffs should plan to take in the Hampton Roads Naval Museum and the Douglas MacArthur Memorial. Another worthwhile stop is the Chrysler Museum, which showcases the varied collection of Walter Chrysler, Jr. For the Norfolk shopping, dining and nightlife scenes, the Ghent Historic District is your best bet.
