More about Nottingham
Nottinghamshire is the land of Robin Hood. It was here, in Sherwood Forest, that the fictional outlaw carried out his exploits. Regrettably, the once dense forest has been reduced to a smattering of trees, and is today the victim of encroaching industry. The major city of Nottingham has been called the "Queen of the Midlands," and has long been recognized as a manufacturing center for lace and hosiery. Visitors should make a point to stroll through the Victorian warehouses of the Lace Market. Although the post-industrial, post-war layout is fairly typical, the city does make for an interesting stop. Highlights include the Nottingham Castle Museum, the ancient Craswell Crags, Clumber Park, and the nearby Newstead Abbey, which is the former home of poet Lord Byron. In addition, sports fans can cheer on the Nottingham Forest football team.
