More about Nuremberg
As the second largest city in southern Germany (behind Munich), Nuremberg is a dynamic town with a rich – though not always pleasant – history. Founded in the eleventh century, Nuremberg's darkest hour came in World War II, when Allied bombings all but destroyed the city. Thanks to a massive rebuilding project, the city has been restored to its former glory. Today, Nuremberg enjoys a healthy economy, which is primarily grounded in electronics and transportation, as well as a thriving tourist industry. Visitors come for a taste of Old World Bavarian beer and sausage. During the summer, Nuremberg's historic area, Altstadt, is alive with concerts, dancing, and a festive nightlife. Noted attractions include Burg Castle, Kaiserburg, the Albrecht Dürer Haus, and the bustling Hauptmarkt. The city also puts on great festivals, including the Christkindlesmarkt each Christmas, and the annual International Toy Fair.
