OAKLAND.   This relaxed New American spot strives to be one of the best neighborhood restaurants in Oakland, and a menu of dressed-up takes on comfort food classics reflects this ideal. Try a starter of Belgian-style fries, ably accompanied by chipotle aioli and smoked paprika ketchup. A relatively small selection of entrees still contains enough variety to please and includes treats like grilled pork loin in a red wine-mustard sauce, gratinéed mac and cheese with leeks and green beans, and baked polenta with a ragout of spring vegetables. A decent array of sandwiches is available at lunch alongside a few of the dinner entrees, and the friendly spot is open for Sunday brunch as well.   (© 10Best)
