OAKLAND. This venerable restaurant has had a following since 1975, and it continues to delight patrons by providing California cuisine with an unmistakable Mediterranean touch. The menu consistently takes advantage of the freshest ingredients of the season and always includes innovative dishes that hone in on a particular region, such as Tuscany or the Basque country. A recent menu included duck, pork cooked in milk with apricots, and squash and ricotta ravioli. Sorbets are superb. The setting, in a lovely Victorian home complete with heated outdoor deck, makes Bay Wolf one of the finest restaurants in the area.

OAKLAND. This relaxed New American spot strives to be one of the best neighborhood restaurants in Oakland, and a menu of dressed-up takes on comfort food classics reflects this ideal. Try a starter of Belgian-style fries, ably accompanied by chipotle aioli and smoked paprika ketchup. A relatively small selection of entrees still contains enough variety to please and includes treats like grilled pork loin in a red wine-mustard sauce, gratinéed mac and cheese with leeks and green beans, and baked polenta with a ragout of spring vegetables. A decent array of sandwiches is available at lunch alongside a few of the dinner entrees, and the friendly spot is open for Sunday brunch as well.

OAKLAND. Located in the East Bay, this coffee shop-style restaurant ignores dining trends but gets high marks for its interesting, vaguely Asian atmosphere and appealing, diner-like menu. Considered a local treasure by many, it's the best place to go for hash browns, bacon, 20 kinds of omelets, eggs Benedict, great coffee, waffles, and huevos rancheros. The quirky favorite even displays the best of its patrons' napkin art on the walls.

Frequently called the best pizza in Oakland and winner of numerous awards and polls, Zachary's is also known for its energetic atmosphere. The spinach and mushroom stuffed pizza, with a secret blend of herbs, is a house specialty, and many people order take-out to get their regular fix. Interesting posters drawn by children, friendly service, and an eclectic crowd of patrons make this a fun place to hang out as well.
