LAGUNA BEACH.
Perhaps one of the OC's best (and most under-publicized) Californian options, Cafe Zoolu is a true product of its surroundings. Eclectic, funky decor features the bold (zebra-striped seats), the unusual (autographed photos of k.d. Lang and the Kingston Trio), and the outright eccentric (Polynesian-style salt and pepper shakers). Owner-chef Michael Leach's menu, noted for its global appeal, is the true star, made complete with superb potstickers, veal chops, and grilled swordfish that have earned rave reviews from critics and diners alike.

Ecectic ambiance, exceptional food preparation and relaxed but particular service. A California experience not to be missed.

On the recommendation of a local who eats out a lot, we walked from our hotel to our destination no reservation in hand. Upon arriving we had the distinct feeling that reservations are the norm and after we looked around, we could understand why. Very small; perhaps ten tables. Nonetheless, we were seated promptly and politely and after selecting some wine (we weren't sure what kind, so sample tastes were provided) we went to work on the menu. Now we're pretty middle of the road folks and we take suggestions well, so I selected a swordfish sampler (three preparations 1. Lemon butter and capers 2. Blackened and slightly spicy 3. Doused with a sauce loaded with macadamia nuts). The fish surrounded a large mound of mashed potatoes redolent of garlic and in the spaces between the fish were perfectly steamed veggies. Enough food for two hungry people and then some…. we made the decision to come back the next night…Now comes the plans for next year's visit to Laguna Beach arranged around some meals at Cafe Zoolu.
