SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO. One of California's oldest Spanish missions, San Juan Capistrano dates from 1776 and still features a variety of adobe foundations and a few working buildings. Although the once-majestic Great Stone Church is no longer intact, the intimate chapel with its baroque altar is still in use. The mission's legendary swallows, said to arrive every year on St. Joseph's Day, add to the place's charm. The sites' museum recollects the history of the mission, and a variety of art and cultural activities are hosted each season.

LAGUNA BEACH. A favorite with Laguna Beach's fashionable set thanks to its contemporary atmosphere and some of Orange County's best eye candy, this trendy dance club and sushi joint makes a larger-than-life impression. Sleek Asian decor, evocative lighting, and pulsating dance beats set the stage for an evening of high-octane sophistication. On weekends, the action becomes even more heated, as everything reaches a fun and frenzied fever pitch. Even better, you'll pay no cover if you spend a certain amount in the restaurant beforehand.

ANAHEIM. Set in an Arts and Crafts-style hotel, Napa Rose takes the best from California's vineyards, dairies, farms, and seacoast and submits it all to chef Andrew Sutton, who creates magical dishes with the bounty. The rose-themed restaurant does everything well and is the hotel's most expensive establishment, so you may want to save it for an adult occasion. The Californian wine list is extensive, and it's refreshing to be able to get a glass in the usually dry Disneyland® Resort.

The fashionable shopping center features Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, and Sears as its venerable anchors and also mixes in places like Chanel, Burberry, Ermenegildo Zegna, Christian Dior, Jimmy Choo, Giorgio Armani, Pucci, Montblanc, Yves Delorme, and Versace. These luminaries are accompanied by a good selection of top-rated and more casual restaurants, both independent and chain.

DANA POINT. Glamorous, sophisticated Stonehill is a far cry from the earthy tavern premise its name asserts. Rather, the Michael Mina enterprise revels in perfectly prepared New American fare, a menu of delicacies which its gorgeous clientele can't seem to deny themselves. Among the treats you'll uncover are prime short ribs, salt-baked Maine lobster, Berkshire pig served two ways, and Tasmanian ocean trout. House-made desserts are decadent creations, and Mina's appetizers (served individually or as trios) are also wonderful, practically enough to nibble on for an entire meal. Great wine list too.

ORANGE. Set in a Tolkien-inspired cottage, this restaurant wows diners with supposedly magical allure and Old World charm that's evoked by a wine cellar, cozy fireplaces, and a patio. With understated elegance, the cozy home-away-from-home features a seven-course, prix fixe Continental menu with standouts like beef Wellington, herb-crusted loin of lamb, beef filet with foie gras ravioli, and filet mignon stuffed with wild mushrooms. The entire meal is served in three "acts" and allows diners time to meet other patrons, relax, and enjoy an eminently luxurious repast.
