ANAHEIM. Disney's California Adventure® Park celebrates the Golden State with themed attractions like a replica of the Golden Gate Bridge, a Hollywood Pictures Backlot, and Paradise Pier, which celebrates the state's old oceanfront amusement parks. Children love "a bug's land"-themed rides and shows (like Heimlich's Chew Chew Train), and on a hot day, Princess Dot Puddle Park can't be beat. The place isn't just for kids, though. In addition to expected pizza, burger, and hot dog stands, you'll find adult-oriented restaurants and a winery, not to mention rides and attractions just for grown-ups.

BUENA PARK. Billed as America's first theme park, this complex features 150 acres of thrill rides, live entertainment, historic exhibits, and world-class dining, all divided into six themed areas. Among them are Ghost Town – an 1880s Western boom town with cowboys, gun fights, stagecoaches and gold panning – and Boardwalk, a coastal amusement park of the 1920s. Wild Water Wilderness and Camp Snoopy are children's favorites. You'll also want to see the full-size replica of Independence Hall or hear a major performer at the Good Time Theatre.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO. One of California's oldest Spanish missions, San Juan Capistrano dates from 1776 and still features a variety of adobe foundations and a few working buildings. Although the once-majestic Great Stone Church is no longer intact, the intimate chapel with its baroque altar is still in use. The mission's legendary swallows, said to arrive every year on St. Joseph's Day, add to the place's charm. The sites' museum recollects the history of the mission, and a variety of art and cultural activities are hosted each season.

ANAHEIM. Baseball greats like Rod Carew and Reggie Jackson once trod this field and wowed fans with their heroics, paving the way for the modern generation of Angels. Until 1995, the NFL Rams shared the stadium, but after they moved to St. Louis, the Angels became the sole resident. A massive renovation project gave the entire structure a much-needed facelift, complete with terraced bullpens, Nestle Family Zone, interactive Pepsi Perfect Game Pavilion, a handful of restaurants, and KnotHole Club sports bar.

LAGUNA BEACH. Just steps from the Pacific Ocean, this institution preserves local artistic traditions with an impressive repertoire of shows. Past exhibits have focused on coastal photography from the 1930s and '40s, a "Surf Culture" retrospective, and a collection of impressionistic art from Laguna Beach-area artists. After browsing the exhibits, stop by the Museum Store and Art Rental and Sales Gallery – you may just find a print or two that would look perfect hanging behind the desk in your office.

The impressive structure is comprised of more than 10,000 panes of glass, and coincidentally, the church boasts more than 10,000 members. YORBA LINDA. Richard Milhouse Nixon, the nation's 37th president, was born in sleepy Yorba Linda on January 9, 1913. In 1990, he and Presidents Bush, Reagan and Ford attended the opening ceremony of the nine-acre Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace site, which includes a museum, gallery space, the First Lady Garden, and the family home. Today, history buffs can stop by the center and learn about the late president's early life and public career. The birthplace, a quaint farmhouse that Nixon's father built, has been lovingly restored to its original state, complete with furniture, family photos, and the piano he learned to play as a lad.
